As a Director/Choreographer

M-Jay began his career as a choreographer and director in college, focusing on Chinese dance and gala shows. His solo piece, Survivor, which he both choreographed and performed, garnered recognition at the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival, earning him the prestigious Golden Award for performance and choreography.

Transitioning into musical theatre, M-Jay expanded his expertise with a range of professional directing and choreography credits. He worked as an assistant to the Tony-nominated Kuperman Brothers on Neverland: Peter Pan with Broadway Asia and China Broadway Entertainment. Additionally, he created the original Chinese translation of 42nd Street, which premiered at the Beijing Dance Academy, a premier institution for musical theatre training in China.

He holds an M.A. in Theatre Directing from SUNY Binghamton University. Currently, M-Jay is developing a new musical titled Vanya!, with music by Yoav Bar and book/lyrics by Diana Ivanova. The first workshop of this production won the Best Score award at the 2024 New York Theater Festival.

M-Jay began his artistic journey directing musicals at the Beijing Dance Academy. To further develop his skills, he dedicated two years of his master’s program to directing plays at Binghamton University. As an Asian queer artist with a strong background in dance and physical techniques, M-Jay is particularly committed to advancing Asian-American LGBTQ+ theater, bringing unique perspectives to the stage.
